Callum Wilson came off the bench to almost single-handedly give Newcastle United the win at St James’ Park after a nervy first half against Southampton.
This afternoon saw Alexander Isak preferred up front to Callum Wilson once again. Isak was flanked by Anthony Gordon on the left and Jacob Murphy on the right and it was the former who had Newcastle‘s best chances of the first half.
Gordon put one into the side netting and later on hit the outside of the post in a one-v-one with the Southampton keeper. Southampton looked lively in the first half and took the lead just before the break.
Callum Wilson’s half-time introduction changed the game
Anthony Gordon’s poor finishing seemed to have cost him as he was replaced at half-time by Callum Wilson and Isak was pushed out to the left. It was a move that absolutely worked, right from the off.
The Magpies dominated the second half running out 3-1 winners thanks to a double from Wilson and a Theo Walcott own goal. Wilson was also very unlucky to have a goal chalked off for offside after a two and a half minute VAR check to see if the ball clipped Miguel Almiron‘s heel.

With those two goals Wilson has now moved on to 15 goals this season, the first Newcastle player to do so since Demba Ba in 2011/12. Eleven years it has taken us to find another 15 goal striker and now we have two. Although Isak may not hit 15 this season, you can almost guarantee he will next season.
Wilson’s eight goals for Newcastle made him April’s top scorer
Wilson has now also out-scored Erling Haaland in April. The Newcastle man bagged eight goals this month in seven games while Haaland managed just six.
Given how many games Wilson and Isak have missed this season it boggles the mind to think of how many goals they’d have got if they’d managed to stay fit.
This win for Newcastle sees them hold on to that third place spot despite Manchester United scraping a win over Aston Villa, but the Red Devils are only two points behind with a game in hand.
