Newcastle United are edging closer to announcing a major contract extension at St James’ Park.
That is the view of the Athletic’s George Caulkin, who has spoke about Bruno Guimaraes potentially signing a new deal with Newcastle.
The midfielder signed a deal until the summer of 2026 when he joined in January 2022, and there have been rumours of a new and improved contract for almost a year now.
There was hope that it would be concluded at the end of last season, but that did not happen. However, there now appears to have been a breakthrough, and there is even talk that Bruno’s new contract may include a release clause.
That could be good or bad depending on how much the release clause is worth, but the main thing is that a contract extension is close to being signed.

New Bruno Guimaraes contract is ‘pretty much done’
Caulkin has spoke about rumours of Bruno signing a new contract with Newcastle on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, and has shared some information that he knows about the situation.
“It’s not a rumour, it’s true,” he said.
“I think that is pretty much done now. That’s good news.”
Caulkin added: “There’s been to-and-fro on how much he gets paid. I think he wanted a bit more when the first offer came to him. That’s all been done. They’re very close now and that’s good news.”
Brilliant news for Newcastle
Caulkin is incredibly well-respected among Toon fans, so his certainty regarding Bruno’s new deal is very exciting. He appears to be adamant that a contract extension is on the horizon, which will hopefully keep the Brazilian at St James’ Park for a very long time.
There has been plenty of talk about Bruno leaving Newcastle over the past few days. There was seemingly a lot of interest in him during the summer, but the Magpies stood firm and retained the services of their most influential player.

Bruno has been transformative since his arrival from Lyon, and has bought into the owners’ project. He is a major part of the club’s vision, and is a key reason why we are set to compete in the Champions League this season.
Signing him to a new contract will be a statement of intent from Newcastle, while it will also protect the player’s value. If the worst did happen and Bruno did decide to leave, we would at least be in a situation where we would likely get a huge amount of money for him.
But fans will not want to think about that. Instead, we want to think about a long and bright future with Bruno in the middle, because he knows exactly what we need…
