There was plenty of VAR controversy in Newcastle United’s goalless draw with Everton in the Premier League.
In their final game before the October international break, Newcastle United picked up one point from their trip to Goodison Park.
Eddie Howe’s side now sit seventh in the Premier League table and remain in the race for European qualification.

Anthony Gordon had the biggest chance of the game but missed from the penalty spot against his former side after Sandro Tonali was dragged to the ground by James Tarkowski.
Referee Craig Pawson initially rejected Newcastle’s penalty claims, but he then reversed his decision after being instructed to check the monitor by VAR.

VAR audio for Dan Burn penalty incident vs Everton
There was more penalty drama later in the match when Dan Burn tangled with Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the second half.
There was clear contact between the two players as Calvert-Lewin lined up a shot at goal, but the hosts were denied a penalty. The Premier League have explained their decision with a statement after the game.
The incident was sent to VAR at the time, and audio from the officials has now been released by the Premier League.
As per Sky Sports, Pawson immediately said after the challenge: “No. Not for me, not for me. There’s a challenge between two of them, not for me.”
VAR official Chris Kavanagh then replied: “Gets his foot in front, he kicks him. It’s not a penalty. That is not a penalty. The attacker kicks the back of the defender.”
PGMOL chief Howard Webb agreed with the VAR verdict, saying “I heard the mix of the opinions. I don’t think it’s a penalty, it’s a good on-field decision.
“Nick Pope makes a save and Dan Burn moves in a straight line, in front of [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin. He makes contact from behind and it’s a normal coming together.
“It was a good judgement by on-field officials and VAR. There is no offence by Burn.”
Newcastle United must improve after international break
Newcastle were one kick away from picking up another win at Goodison Park, but the overall verdict is that performances must improve.
Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season, and Newcastle are still on track, but poor performances will eventually prove costly if they continue.
Newcastle have gotten away with poor performances one too many times this season, with the only really impressive display coming in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
As match fitness improves and players return from injury, it is up to Howe to try and replicate the peformance against City on a more regular basis.
