A Premier League scout has discussed the weaknesses in Newcastle United target and Copenhagen winger Roony Bardghji’s game.
Newcastle have shown interest in the 18-year-old who made his name known to the world when he scored the winner against Manchester United in the Champions League earlier this month.
It’s known that he is an exciting talent and one of the most promising in Europe, but a Premier League scout has been speaking to The Athletic to discover what he will have to improve on if he is to make it to the very top.
Bardghji has lots of room to improve
The teenager has already shown brilliant composure in the dying minutes against the Red Devils which will serve him well in what could be a long and successful career.
But Bardghji will still have to improve in a lot of areas if he is to make it in a physical and intense division like the Premier League.
A scout from the Premier League has revealed that the attacker will have to play in a team that doesn’t require him to defend, similar to the way PSG have to accommodate for Kylian Mbappe’s talents or Barcelona accommodated for Lionel Messi.
Speaking to The Athletic, the scout said: “He’s going to have to be a big fish in a small pond at first and that will limit where he can go. He’s not the most athletic player, so it will be about finding the right style and shape. Perhaps a narrow right-side role in a 4-3-3, which would provide plenty of cover behind and doesn’t demand that he cover great distances.”
Kasper Larsen, who watches Copenhagen train most days, added to what he thought Bardghji is weakest at.
Larsen said: “His defending can be much better. But he’s young. And he’s not that fast and I think in modern football you need to be fast. But he has a lot of potential and I don’t think we’ve even seen half of it.”
Bardghji is being scouted by Newcastle and a handful of other European sides and they will have to decide for themselves whether they think they can develop the Copenhagen star’s weaknesses or if he is just not suited to their style of play.
Newcastle would have to be patient with Bardghji
As we’ve seen so many times before, players with huge potential can’t just immediately transfer their success and style of play to the Premier League, they must adapt.
There is no league in the world that is as quick or as physical, and Bardghji, from what we’ve seen of him at Copenhagen, does not suit the profile of your typical Premier League star, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t succeed at Newcastle.
There’s confidence, there’s so much untapped potential, and Eddie Howe, the man who turned Joelinton into a dominant midfielder, will truly believed that he can get the best out of the 18-year-old should he get the chance.
Newcastle fans would of course have to be patient. We’ve already seen with the likes of Yankuba Minteh, who is on loan at PSV, that players don’t have to arrive at St James’ Park and hit the ground running immediately.
