Elliot Anderson is back training with Newcastle United.

The teenager has had a 2022 to remember so far, kicking it off with a loan move to League Two side Bristol Rovers.

There was initially speculation that he could join Luton in the Championship, but that deal never came to fruition.

In the end, former Toon midfielder Joey Barton was able to land the talented youngster on loan until the end of the season. And it was a transfer that inspired an incredible promotion.

Anderson was fantastic in a Rovers shirt, ending his time there with eight goals and five assists.

His final goal was the most important, as it sealed promotion to League One. The Gas needed to beat Scunthorpe 7-0 to go up automatically, and Anderson netted the decisive seventh goal.

It led to wild scenes at the Memorial Stadium, while Anderson leaves Rovers being coined the ‘Geordie Maradona‘.

Following their promotion, Anderson’s season came to an end slightly earlier than anticipated. However, there was speculation that he could feature for Newcastle in their remaining games.

However, that was not the case.

But while he can’t actually play, Anderson has returned to first-team training with Eddie Howe’s side. The 19-year-old has been pictured alongside his teammates, who are preparing for Sunday’s game with Burnley.

He was congratulated by Howe’s squad, having taken League Two by storm.

It’s a shame Anderson can’t feature, but he certainly has a bright future at St James’ Park. It feels likely that he’ll go out on loan again next season, hopefully to the Championship.

But Howe will cast his eye over him in pre-season, and may even give him some minutes in a friendly or two.

Newcastle United have someone really special within their ranks. As Barton said in March, he’s a ‘huge talent’.
