Peterborough chairman urges Newcastle to re-sign Brentford’s Ivan Toney

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes that Newcastle United should look to re-sign Ivan Toney this summer.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford are eight points above the relegation places with eight games remaining and the Bees have given themselves a great chance of survival in their first season in the Premier League.

However, if it wasn’t for their talisman Toney’s 11 Premier League goals, Frank’s side could have found themselves firmly engulfed in a relegation dogfight.

After Toney, Yoane Wissa is Brentford’s second top scorer in the Premier League with four goals. Despite being injured for a large chunk of the season, Callum Wilson is still Newcastle’s top scorer with six goals.

Despite not earning a maiden international call-up for Gareth Southgate’s England squad, Harry Kane (12) is the only Englishman who has scored more Premier League goals than Toney so far this campaign.

But with Wilson struggling to stay fit for a full season and Chris Wood having one goal from his first 10 games for the Magpies, MacAnthony feels that if PIF had any sense they would try and lure Toney back to Tyneside.

“If Newcastle had any sense they would be signing him and bringing him back,” he told The Hard Truth Podcast.

“The Geordies would absolutely worship the ground he walks on because he would score 20 goals in a Newcastle team with better players.”

Toney made his name at Peterborough in League One when he left Newcastle four years ago.

In 94 games for the Posh, Toney scored 49 goals and produced 15 assists. His form at London Road resulted in Brentford coming calling for the hotshot.

In his first season in the Championship, Toney fired Brentford to the big time and finished the season with 33 goals and 10 assists from 48 second tier matches.

After successfully making the transition from League One to the Championship, Toney has more than impressed following the jump up to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old, who made four appearances for the Newcastle United first team, is a handful for any defence and given PIF’s lofty ambitions for Eddie Howe’s side, Toney may feel he has unfinished business at St James’ Park.
