It’s Southampton vs Newcastle United this weekend, and pundit Paul Merson thinks the Magpies are going to make it four wins in a row at the expense of the Saints.
Eddie Howe’s side head to the south coast in fantastic form, having enjoyed a sensational October. Newcastle picked up 16 points out of a possible 18, with only Manchester United stopping the Magpies from being victorious.
We are now in fourth position, and look like genuine European contenders. And our position in the top four will only be strengthened with another victory this weekend.
In Newcastle’s final away game before the World Cup, they face a Southampton side who find themselves at the wrong end of the table.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team are struggling, and are currently 17th in the Premier League table.
Having picked up victories in our last three games, the form book points directly towards another Newcastle win. And that’s exactly what Merson thinks will happen.
Merson predicts Newcastle to win again vs Southampton
Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, Merson has provided his predictions in his latest column for Sportskeeda.
The former Arsenal forward thinks Newcastle will win 3-0 at St Mary’s, and can’t see anything other than a Toon victory.
“Newcastle are playing really well at the moment,” he wrote.
“They’ve gone eight Premier League games without a single defeat, and their 2-1 loss to Liverpool was due to a late goal. I don’t see anything but a Newcastle victory this weekend.”
Pressure on Newcastle to deliver again on the road
As Newcastle continue to thrive, the pressure begins to build. This now looks like a game that Howe’s side should comfortably win.
However, there are no guarantees in the Premier League, and any sort of complacency will most certainly be punished.
But throughout Howe’s tenure, Newcastle have been a professional outfit. The team spirit right now is sensational, and that will hopefully carry on through to the Southampton game.
If we want to be serious contenders for Europe, we need to be winning games like this. Southampton are lacking confidence, while we have stacks of it.
Newcastle won 2-1 at St Mary’s last season, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring a backheel volley for his first Toon goal. Something similar would be absolutely perfect.
Callum Wilson will hope it’s him who is on the scoresheet, as he looks to make one final push to be in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
But Howe won’t be bothered who scores – as long as his Newcastle team do the business and pick up three points for the travelling Toon Army.
