Patrik Schick, the man who scored stunning goal vs Scotland, reportedly could’ve joined Newcastle last summer

An incredible goal from former Newcastle United target Patrik Schick ensured Scotland got off to a nightmare start to Euro 2020.

Scotland were the final home nation to kick off their Euros campaign, after Wales and England picked up points in their openers against Switzerland and Croatia respectively.

This was a huge game for Scotland – their first at a major tournament since 1998.

While the Czech Republic were tough opposition, this was seen as their best chance at three points.

However, a brace from Schick handed Scotland a defeat in their opening game.

The first was a wonderful header, while the second was a stunning lob from the halfway line. Schick almost got himself a hat-trick, but was denied by David Marshall.

It was a proper striker’s performance from Schick, with a header that Alan Shearer or Les Ferdinand would’ve been proud of.

But could he have been a Newcastle United player right now?

According to the Daily Mail in June last year, Newcastle were interested in signing Schick from AS Roma.

The report even stated that the Magpies were keen whether a takeover happened or not.

Newcastle clearly needed a striker 12 months ago, with goals hard to come by for record signing Joelinton.

It was reported that Roma would sell the forward for £24million, but would also listen to loan offers with an obligation to buy. And that was why Newcastle were interested.

In the end, no deal came to fruition.

Newcastle did get a striker, signing Callum Wilson for £20million.

Steve Bruce wanted players he could rely on, and Wilson was exactly that.

He ended the season with 12 goals and five assists, despite missing a lot of games due to injury.

As for Schick, he signed for Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen. He cost them just shy of £23million, and scored nine goals.

Newcastle got a cheaper striker who scored more goals. But that does not mean that Schick would’ve been a poor addition.

The 25-year-old proved how good he is in front of goal against Scotland, putting Ryan Fraser and co to the sword.

Here’s hoping he’s less prolific when he faces England on Tuesday June 22nd.
