One Newcastle United star had the Fulham bench ‘repeatedly’ banging the dugout in frustration

Jacob Murphy’s industry and energy helped Newcastle United take the lead against Fulham in a crucial Premier League win on Saturday. 

Murphy scored the opener as Newcastle United beat Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League at St James’ Park. 

The winger robbed Calvin Bassey of the ball before driving forward and unleashing a fine finish past a brilliant goalkeeper in the shape of Bernd Leno.

The Cottagers came back into the game and looked set for at least a point before Bruno Guimaraes struck late to record a vital victory for Eddie Howe.  

Murphy’s impact for Newcastle had the Fulham bench fuming.

Fulham’s coaching staff were fuming at Jacob Murphy’s goal  

As per Ciaran Kelly of BBC Sport, members of Fulham’s coaching staff “repeatedly banged the dugout” in frustration as Murphy raced through on goal. It was an avoidable mistake from a Fulham perspective but the Newcastle star’s role in it should not be played down.   

It was his pressing that forced Bassey into a mistake and even then, the 30-year-old still had an awful lot to do.

Indeed, to score from a reasonably difficult angle past Leno is no mean feat.

Kelly wrote in the BBC’s LIVE blog: “Fulham’s coaching staff repeatedly banged the roof of the dugout in frustration as Jacob Murphy raced clear to open the scoring.”

Jacob Murphy’s teammates still think he’s still underrated at Newcastle United 

Even without Alexander Isak in the team, Murphy continues to flourish.

That goal built on the assist he recorded for Anthony Gordon in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Newcastle’s wingers have not been in brilliant form this season but Murphy appears to be building up a head of steam now.

He remains one of Howe’s most important players and Anthony Gordon believes Murphy is still underrated as a player. 

After the Benfica game, Gordon said: “He can do absolutely everything any winger can do in the Premier League and I don’t know why he’s so underestimated. I love playing with him.”

Murphy has shown little sign of slowing down even after losing one of the world’s best forwards to play alongside. That is a testament to his enduring quality.
