Anthony Gordon can’t believe that Newcastle United star is still so underrated

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon believes teammate Jacob Murphy is criminally underrated.

Murphy provided the assist from which Gordon scored Newcastle United’s opener during their 3-0 win over Benfica on Tuesday night.

The 30-year-old recorded 12 Premier League assists last season and has already racked up three across all competitions this time around.

Murphy looks a much better bet than Anthony Elanga, the man who was signed as his long-term heir, right now.

While the wide players in the Newcastle United squad have struggled to wholly convince on a consistent basis this season, Murphy remains arguably Eddie Howe’s most reliable source of assists.

Speaking after Newcastle beat Benfica in the Champions League, Gordon was effusive in his praise for his teammate.

Anthony Gordon can’t believe how underrated Jacob Murphy is

The forward was speaking after the game. His opener was followed by a brace from Harvey Barnes, the latter of which was teed up by Gordon following a fine move that also included a brilliant backheel from Nick Woltemade.

Asked about Murphy in particular, Gordon expressed his surprise that he remained underrated from people outside of the Newcastle circle.

“He’s so underestimated as a player, honestly,” he said (via iNews).

“He can do absolutely everything any winger can do in the Premier League and I don’t know why he’s so underestimated. I love playing with him.”

Jacob Murphy has found his new Alexander Isak at Newcastle United

That was the second goal for which Gordon and Murphy have combined this season, following the former Everton man’s strike against Barcelona.

In total, they’ve joined forces for six goals in 63 games together.

So much has been made about Newcastle’s lack of attacking power this season, outside of Nick Woltemade.

Still, Murphy remains a palatable threat on the assist front. He’s still building his connection with Woltemade but is clearly enjoying playing alongside Gordon.

Murphy’s connection with Alexander Isak was a major reason for last season’s success. This time around, it could be his connection with Gordon that stands out.
