Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Leandro Trossard in January, and Darren Bent thinks he has been one of the Premier League’s best players this season.

The TalkSPORT pundit was asked to name his top five Premier League players of the season so far, and found room for Trossard.

That’s not surprising given how well the Belgian has been playing. He currently has seven goals to his name, and is the joint-fifth top scorer in the division.

The 27-year-old is currently tied with Miguel Almiron, who was also named in Bent’s top five of the season so far.

They have both been excellent for their respective clubs, but could become teammates in January if Dan Ashworth gets his wish.

He reportedly wants to be reunited with Trossard, and the Northern Echo have claimed that Newcastle will launch an inquiry for the £30million rated player.

Bent thinks Trossard is one of the players of the season

If Newcastle do sign Trossard, they will be getting a player who is seriously in form. And Bent has heaped praise on the former Genk star, before speculating where he could end up.

“In at number three in my five is Leandro Trossard,” Bent told TalkSPORT.

“He’s been so good.”

Bent was then asked if he thinks Chelsea will make a move for him, given his history with Blues boss Graham Potter.

“Yeah it wouldn’t surprise me. He [Potter] knows him, trusts him.”

Newcastle face competition for Trossard

The Magpies aren’t the only club interested in signing Trossard. It has also been claimed that Chelsea are keen on bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

That isn’t a surprise given they are now managed by Potter, who worked with Trossard at the Amex.

With that in mind and his immense form, an offer from Chelsea would certainly make sense. As Bent says, Trossard is a player who Potter can trust.

A move to Chelsea surely would appeal too. They are a Champions League club, after all. But would it be the best long-term transfer for the Belgium international?

He is clearly ready for a step up, but perhaps Chelsea would be too big a move for Trossard. In contrast, joining Newcastle could be a more natural step up for him.

Eddie Howe is looking for more depth in attack, and wants to sign another wide forward in January. Trossard would fill that role, and could be a sensible addition as we look to qualify for Europe for the first time in a decade.
