Newcastle United 'love' Leeds winger Raphinha according to Fabrizio Romano

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Leeds United winger Raphinha.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who claims the Magpies ‘love’ the 25-year-old.

Raphinha is currently in his second season in the Premier League, and is having a great year on a personal level. He’s scored 10 times and provided three assists, with one of his goals coming against us earlier in the season at St James’ Park.

However, the campaign could end in heartache for Raphinha. Leeds are currently in a relegation battle, and look most likely to drop into the Championship.

Jesse Marsch’s side are currently 18th in the league with two games remaining. Their fate is no longer in their hands.

Whether Leeds stay up or not, it feels increasingly likely that Raphinha will leave Elland Road this summer. But will he head to St James’ Park?

Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle want Raphinha from Leeds

Romano recently appeared on the Wondergoal podcast and spoke about the Magpies’ ‘love’ for Leeds’ number 10.

“A player they love is Raphinha from Leeds,” Romano said.

“We know that Barcelona are leading the race to sign him, but Newcastle have been exploring this possibility for a long time.

“They know it’s going to be more than complicated because Barcelona are already in advanced talks. On the player side, it depends if Leeds get relegated or not.

“This is the model for them. To go for players who are ready for the present, but also good for the future.”

Newcastle tried to land Raphinha in January

As Romano says, Newcastle have been looking at Raphinha for a long time. UOL claimed that Eddie Howe’s side launched a £35million bid for the Brazil international in January. However, it was rejected.

He would have been a sensational signing in January, and he’d be just as good now.

Seeing him on one wing and Allan Saint-Maximin on the other would be an absolute dream. Defenders would be petrified, and it would make us much more dangerous in attack. However, perhaps it would leave us light at the back with so many luxury players…

If Newcastle do plan to make a fresh move for Raphinha this summer, they will have to fight off Barcelona. They’re the favourites, as Romano says.

Perhaps the prospect of playing alongside his international teammate Bruno Guimaraes can swing things in our favour.

Realistically, it’s going to be very hard to land Raphinha ahead of Barca, who is reportedly keen to move to the Nou Camp.

But this is an indication of the type of players we want to sign, and it’s very exciting.
