Newcastle United reportedly tried and failed to sign Leeds United’s Raphinha in January.

That’s according to UOL, who claim the Magpies offered £35million to sign him during the winter transfer window.

Of course, Raphinha didn’t come to St James’ Park. Instead, Newcastle brought in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn.

Raphinha remained at Leeds, where he has excelled ever since his 2020 arrival. The Brazilian winger is one of the Premier League’s most exciting players, and he would have been an incredible signing for Newcastle.

HITC Sport's First New Signing REVEALED

ASM on one Newcastle wing and Raphinha on the other would be devastating

If Newcastle had signed Raphinha in January, they could have boasted the most exciting pair of wingers in English football today.

Allan Saint-Maximin patrols the left flank for Newcastle, and is untouchable when he’s on form. Frank Lampard recently called him ‘unplayable‘ after a game at St James’ Park.

Ryan Fraser has spent the majority of the season on the right wing, providing a good alternative to ASM. However, he would’ve struggled to retain his place if Raphinha had arrived.

The 25-year-old predominantly plays on the right, meaning Newcastle could have had him on one side and Saint-Maximin on the other. That would have been terrifying for the opposition.

Saint-Maximin is a nightmare for defenders, with teams often getting multiple men around him. But they wouldn’t be able to do that if they knew Raphinha was on the opposite side.

His signing would have made Newcastle so much more dangerous in attack. Bruno Guimaraes’ international teammate has nine Premier League goals to his name this season, as well as three assists.

While it would have put a lot of pressure on the defenders and central midfielders, having two incredibly talented and creative wingers would have been so exciting for supporters.

Saint-Maximin and Raphinha are two of the best players outside of the ‘big six’, and it’s a real shame Newcatle couldn’t strike a deal with Leeds.
