Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser has been spotted leaving the Scotland team hotel in a protective boot and on crutches.

It was announced earlier today that the former Bournemouth man had pulled out of the Scotland squad, ahead of Steve Clarke’s final World Cup qualifying match for this international break against Austria.

Fraser is one of three players to be leaving the squad, the others being Nathan Patterson and Kenny McLean.

Clarke said that Fraser picked up a ‘knock’ in training.

The news of the 27-year-old’s injury comes at a time when Newcastle are also sweating on the fitness of Fraser’s teammate Callum Wilson, as reported by The Shields Gazette.

Although Fraser has struggled to break into Steve Bruce’s side and was deployed in central midfield in the Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley, a role he played in pre-season, the winger could have featured in place of the injured Wilson.

But with Bruce’s side already stretched and lacking quality, a lengthy spell on the sidelines for Fraser highlights yet again why the club needed midfield reinforcements this summer.

This is how some Newcastle fans reacted to the news that Fraser was seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot:
