Newcastle United urged to re-sign ‘talented’ star who never wanted to leave, ‘we have money’

Newcastle United fans have called for the club to re-sign an academy graduate who was forced to leave the club for another Premier League move in recent times.

It is fair to say that the transfer window has not been a big success for the Magpies in the last 18 months. Major PSR troubles coupled with the departure of Dan Ashworth did not help that.

It is approaching two years since Newcastle United last signed a player to improve their starting XI. Lewis Hall signed on loan from Chelsea in August 2023 and has been a success, but transfers have been underwhelming since.

Odysseas Vlachodimos joined Newcastle for £20m but has made just one 45-minute appearance in the Carabao Cup. It now looks like Newcastle are allowing Vlachodimos to leave the club this summer to make room for a new goalkeeper.

Additionally, Newcastle signed William Osula from Sheffield United, and while he has impressed, fans are yet to see the best out of him due to Eddie Howe’s reluctance to play him in big games.

Newcastle have been left to pick up the pieces from their PSR woes last summer, but fans have called for the Magpies to one day re-sign Elliot Anderson, who never wanted to leave the club in the first place.

Newcastle United fans urge Eddie Howe to re-sign Elliot Anderson

Anderson’s exit from Newcastle was a very emotional one. An academy graduate was set for a huge future on Tyneside, but PSR stripped that away from him. In an interview earlier in 2025, Anderson admitted he did not want to leave Newcastle, but realised it was the right thing to do at the time.

Anderson joined Nottingham Forest in June 2024 and has been sensational since. The 22-year-old is now in Slovakia with England Under-21s for the European Championships, where he has continued his good form.

The former Newcastle man kept things tidy and scored a late penalty to send England into the semi-finals of the tournament, making many wish he was still with the Magpies.

“I know I should move on and it’s definitely not that deep, but I would love to see Elliot Anderson play for us again some day.” said one fan on X, while another added: “A player who would love to come back, we’d be his first choice if we went for him.”

This fan referred to a transfer from almost two decades ago, saying: “We had to sell Elliot Anderson and got that sixth-choice goalie. The most devastating loss for the club since James Milner was sold.”

“I would chuck Forest £30m plus Joe Willock for him.” said this eager Newcastle fan.

Another Newcastle fan added: “I’m exactly the same still completely gutted every single time I see him play.”

Finally, this fan said: “Ditto agree wholeheartedly. We have money, get him back.”

While he may not be at Newcastle anymore, he has still been given the chance to play with Tino Livramento for England’s Under-21s in Slovakia. Anderson made a triumphant return to St James’ Park in February when Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 in what turned out to be a huge game in the Champions League race.

Newcastle fans will always love Anderson, with the feeling sure to be mutual for him. The ‘Geordie Maradona’ is set to return to Tyneside again in the 2025/26 campaign, with Forest travelling to St James’ Park at the beginning of October.

Anderson’s reluctant exit has surely been a lesson to everyone at the club; they will be well aware of the consequences of PSR and how it can halt progress if not looked at carefully.

The Magpies are in a much better place with PSR now, but poor financial decisions could put them straight back into the hole they got themselves into in 2024.
