Eddie Howe has struck a wonderful balance in Newcastle United’s midfield with a good mix of class, technique and physicality.

When Newcastle United invest in the first-team squad this summer, perhaps the only position they don’t need any major improvements is in midfield.

Howe has said himself that central midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, with the star-studded trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali nailed-on starters when fit.

Tonali has dropped into a deeper role this season which was a key factor in Newcastle’s nine-game winning streak.

Unfortunately, Joelinton’s latest injury has meant that Howe has had to chop and change his midfield trio, but on the bench, the Magpies have an extreme talent in the shape of Lewis Miley.

Lewis Miley compared to Cesc Fabregas

Miley had to be patient for a chance this season after missing the start of the campaign with a metatarsal fracture, but he has now worked his way back up Howe’s pecking order.

Howe wants to be careful with Miley’s progress, but his recent performances in the Premier League suggest he has a bright future ahead of him.

So much so that pundit Robbie Earle has compared Miley to former Arsenal and Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas.

Speaking on his NBC Podcast, The 2 Robbies, Earle said: “I’m going for a young man who’s come through the Newcastle academy called Lewis Miley, who’s a little diamond.

“I remember watching him in the Champions League, and this kid’s ability to regulate a game, to take a touch, to always have a calmness.

“He looks classy. He’s always got time, he’s always got space which, as we know, is not easy.

“I was once in the company of Arsene Wenger and he was talking about players, and he said to me about Cesc Fabregas, and I said to him ‘what’s the thing about Cesc Fabregas?’ and he said ‘He makes right decisions than any player I’ve ever worked with’ – and I get the sense that Lewis Miley is one of them.”

Lewis Miley ready to become a regular starter

Unfortunately for Miley, breaking into Newcastle’s midfield is no easy feat. But he has managed to jump ahead of both Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock in Howe’s pecking order.

Miley has the ‘world at his feet’, according to Pat Nevin and it’s easy to forget that he is just 18 years old when you watch him controlling games from midfield.

Reports claim Newcastle view Miley’s progress as “vital” with the club eager to help him fulfill his potential.

With Newcastle fighting on three fronts this season still, there will be plenty of opportunities to play both as a starter and off the bench.

When the Magpies were last in Europe, Howe’s squad struggled with the extra midweek games, but quality depth in midfield will be crucial and that is where Miley can thrive.
