Newcastle United were in desperate need of a big win. They got just that against Nottingham Forest.
Early signs suggested that it was going to be another frustrating afternoon for Newcastle United fans to endure. But Eddie Howe’s side were not phased by Callum Hudson-Odoi’s opener, scoring four goals in just 11 minutes.
Alexander Isak got back on the scoresheet after failing to find the net in his last two Premier League games – the Swede was fortunate to score his penalty but made up for it with a second goal a minute later to put him onto league goals for the Magpies.
It was the first game back at St James’ Park for former Toon star Elliot Anderson who joined Nottingham Forest last summer. The 22-year-old has been fantastic all season but struggled to stamp his authority on his old stomping ground.
Elsewhere, Matz Sels failed to impress upon his return to his former club. Sels could’ve had the last laugh against Newcastle but flapped at easy catches and set pieces.
With the Magpies back in the win column, Pat Nevin was full of praise for one star who was sensational all game.

Pat Nevin praises Lewis Miley performance against Nottingham Forest
Newcastle midfielder Lewis Miley was handed his first start since February 2024 and was simply sensational. The 18-year-old scored his second goal of the season in all competitions, perhaps the most important goal that levelled the game and started the Magpies’ terrifying spell in front of goal.
It was reported that Miley was ahead of Sean Longstaff in Newcastle’s pecking order because of the diverse range of qualities he provides to the team. The youngster has now surely done enough to cement his place in the starting XI while Joelinton remains out injured.
Miley’s performance caught the eye of BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Pat Nevin who could not contain his excitement for his future.
Nevin said: “I always look at young players, the end product is not there, it’s about how they look at the game and how others want them on the ball. That’s when you know they are a top player.
“The way Lewis Miley glides on the pitch, there are few that can do that. He is an international in waiting and has the world at his feet.”
The Forest win was Miley’s third start in all competitions this season, with the other two coming in the FA Cup.
Eddie Howe’s plan for Lewis Miley at Newcastle
At his age, some clubs would look to loan Miley out to continue his development. Newcastle did the same with Jamie Miley, Lewis’ brother earlier this season.
It has been a tough season for Miley, his progress may have been hampered by injuries earlier in the campaign but now looks to be back to his best.
Howe has no plans of loaning Miley out at any point in time. He has previously gone on record to state how important Miley is in regard to what Newcastle are working towards in the future.
According to reports, Newcastle sees Miley’s progress as ‘vital‘ and will continue playing him whenever the opportunity arises. At such a young age, it’s important he is eased into the squad at the right time.
