Newcastle United have turned their season around in recent weeks.

Just over a month after Eddie Howe publicly questioned his players for their attitude following the Premier League defeat at Brentford, Newcastle sprang back into life.

Seven consecutive victories across all competitions has raised hope about yet another successful season under the Newcastle United manager.

They are on course to qualify for the Champions League and have one foot in the Carabao Cup final. On Sunday, they face a favourable FA Cup tie against League Two outfit Bromley.

Things are going very well indeed right now and key to their revival has been Sandro Tonali.

The midfielder took a while to get going in a Newcastle shirt upon his return from a ten-month betting ban but has flourished in the No.6 role of late.

Howe has talked of how impressed he’s been and pundit Paul Merson made quite the claim when speaking on Sky Sports on Saturday.

Asked about what had turned Newcastle’s season around, Merson pinpointed Tonali’s emergence as an excellent holding midfielder.

In fact, he even compared him to Manchester City star and current Ballon d’Or holder Rodri.

“I think he’ll be the next Rodri,” he said.

“I think he’s outstanding.

“I’m a big fan of his, he sits behind Bruno [Guimaraes] and gives Bruno more opportunity to bomb forward with Joelinton.

He added: “I think they’ve been outstanding, those three. I think those three have dominated games.”

Sandro Tonali sees a future at Newcastle United

Tonali has been linked with a shock return to AC Milan at some point but it’s difficult to see him going anywhere.

Indeed, Newcastle waited so long for him to come good that it would seem crazy to even consider selling even if a big offer did emerge.

Luckily for the club, it seems the Italian really does see a future at St James’ Park.

He’s recently been talking up the idea of having more “incredible nights” for the club, which hardly seem like the words of a player who wants to leave.

Rodri may be in a class of his own but Tonali is certainly looking like one of the better No.6s in the Premier League.

Thankfully, it looks like he’s in it for the long haul too.
