Newcastle United to discuss major Premier League change that could alter Paul Mitchell’s summer transfer plans

Newcastle United are braced for a big summer transfer window.

After three transfer windows without any major arrivals, Newcastle United are finally in a position to invest.

The Magpies’ PSR position is much stronger thanks to the sales of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, which should allow Paul Mitchell to splash the cash.

While Newcastle will not have a limitless transfer budget, there is certainly money to spend. Mitchell wants to lower the age of Newcastle’s squad, as he sets about freshening up Eddie Howe’s side.

However, he might have to act quicker than first anticipated.

Premier League clubs ponder transfer window change

That is because Premier League clubs are set to decide on when the summer transfer window should close.

According to the Telegraph, Premier League clubs are discussing the possibility of closing the summer transfer window before the 2025/26 season begins.

The belief is that it would benefit managers to have their squad confirmed before the season kicks off, but the counterargument is that the Premier League would need other top leagues in Europe to follow suit. There is also the issue of the Saudi Pro League, who have proven to be massive spenders in recent years.

The Telegraph add that closing the transfer window early will be discussed by Premier League clubs on Thursday. If it does go to a vote, at least 14 clubs will need to vote in favour for it to be approved.

What Newcastle United want this summer

If Premier League clubs do opt to close the transfer window before the season starts, Paul Mitchell will suddenly be under even more pressure at St James’ Park.

He will suddenly have less time to overhaul a squad that is expected to receive a facelift in 2025.

PIF want Newcastle to become an elite club, and that will partially come from evolving the squad and investing in new players.

It has been reported that Newcastle want three outfield signings, while a new goalkeeper will also likely be on the agenda. It is rumoured that James Trafford could join Newcastle from Burnley, after that deal collapsed in 2024.

In terms of outfield players, Eddie Howe needs a centre-back, a right winger and a forward.
