Eddie Howe asks a lot of his wingers at Newcastle United.

It is a difficult role to fulfil, as Eddie Howe wants his wide players to be decisive in the final third, whilst also contributing to the defensive side of the game.

Newcastle United‘s wingers often lead the press, which has resulted in the likes of Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy having to take on a lot of tactical information before a game.

But their real value comes with their goals and assists, which Gordon added to his game last season. The 23-year-old got double figures for both in the Premier League, and that decisiveness took him to the European Championship with England.

Now Newcastle are looking to sign another winger, while they also have a player in the academy who looks destined to make his senior debut very soon.

Eddie Howe sets Trevan Sanusi a target at Newcastle United

Jacob Murphy was Newcastle’s senior star of pre-season, but it was Trevan Sanusi who probably caught the eye the most.

The 17-year-old played a lot of minutes for Eddie Howe’s side, and managed to make a serious impression. Newcastle fans were blown away by Sanusi against Yokohama F Marinos in Japan, while Howe also admitted that Sanusi had impressed him during pre-season.

However, there is still work to do, and the teenager has told Newcastle World what Howe wants him to improve on as he continues his development.

“Get more physical, get bigger, the manager has said I’ll need physicality in the Premier League because obviously it’s going to be a bigger challenge against bigger players and better players,” he said.

“He’s just trying to help me and wants me to get more goals.

“My goal for the season is to get more goals, more assists and be more effective in games. He’s helped me with that aspect of things.”

Clear plan in place for Sanusi to reach his potential at Newcastle

Howe’s message to Sanusi is very clear. He needs to add more goals and assists to his game, and that is exactly what Sanusi intends to do.

While he is extremely exciting to watch with his speed and dribbling ability, it means nothing if he is not contributing in the final third. I thought this whilst watching Sanusi play for Newcastle Under-21s against Sunderland on Monday night. He was tremendously exciting, but there was a feeling that he could do more in dangerous areas.

Of course, this is not a criticism of Sanusi. He is still an extremely young player who has a huge amount of potential to grow and improve. That is the plan, and Howe has pinpointed what he must do to make the step up from youth football to the senior side.

But the hype is very much real when it comes to Sanusi. He has made a major impression over the summer, and it will be exciting to see what he can achieve in the coming years.

Goals and assists will come his way at Newcastle United, just like they did for Anthony Gordon.
