It was the same old story for the Magpies, who dominated much of the game but were made to pay for missing far too many clear-cut chances.
Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game for the visitors which has dropped Newcastle down to eighth in the Premier League table.

Lewis Miley returns for Newcastle vs Brighton
Miley was Newcastle’s breakthrough star last season having burst onto the scene because of the injury crisis.
He became a key player in midfield for Eddie Howe and impressed in the Premier League and Champions League.
Miley missed the latter stages of last season with a back problem and then suffered a foot injury ahead of pre-season. The timing of his injuries were unfortunate, but Miley insists he has grown physically stronger during his time on the sidelines.
It means the 18-year-old has not played for Newcastle since March, but Miley was spotted back in training last week and was fit enough to feature on the bench against Brighton.
He ended the match as an unused substitute, but it was fantastic to see Miley back available, and he could make his return to action against Chelsea next Sunday.
Newcastle target Tyler Dibling responds to Lewis Miley
Miley took to Instagram to send a 12-word message after his return to Newcastle’s matchday squad.
He posted: “Back at it. Good to be back involved with the team today.”
Interestingly, Newcastle target Tyler Dibling was quick to respond to Miley’s message.

Newcastle have been strongly linked with Dibling after the Southampton winger’s impressive breakthrough for the Saints.
The Magpies have a long-term interest in Dibling having monitored him since 2022. He was admired by former sporting director Dan Ashworth but is still on Newcastle’s radar.
With Newcastle prioritising a right-sided winger in the upcoming transfer windows, Dibling could be among the top targets.
