Newcastle United sweating on Yoane Wissa injury as mixed messages on return date revealed

Newcastle United desperately need Yoane Wissa to return.

While Nick Woltemade has made a promising start to his career at Newcastle United, there’s a lack of goals from elsewhere in the team.

Indeed, Eddie Howe pushed Newcastle to sign Wissa from Brentford even when the price ramped up towards the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Wissa, at least in theory, brings as close to a guarantee of Premier League goals as is possible. The 29-year-old scored 45 in 137 games for Brentford, and his haul of 19 last season did not include a single penalty.

However, perhaps summing up the luck Newcastle had during the summer window, Wissa is currently out injured with a knee problem.

There is a hope that the DR Congo international will return in October but that may not be a certainty.

Doubts emerge over Yoane Wissa’s injury return date

After Newcastle lost 2-1 to Arsenal on Sunday, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie posted a video on YouTube.

He addressed Wissa’s injury and suggested there were different noises behind the scenes about exactly when the forward will return to action.

“We don’t yet know when he’s going to be back,” he said.

“There seems to be a bit of a grey area over that. The noises are different. I’m hearing from different places as to when he’s going to be back.”

Wissa could cost Newcastle £55million if the criteria for various add-ons are met, so they need to see a return on their investment relatively soon considering the player has little in the way of resale value.

Why Newcastle United will not be paying Yoane Wissa’s wages

One slight boost for the club right now is that Wissa’s Newcastle United salary will soon be paid from another source.

Last week, The Daily Mail revealed that the Club Protection Programme (CPP) will be paying the forward’s wages from October 7 until the point he makes his debut for the club.

The CPP is an insurance scheme designed to protect clubs who have had players injured while on international duty and are subsequently ruled out for more than 28 days.

Hopefully, Wissa returns after the international break. Newcastle really need him.
