Newcastle United were dealt several injury blows during their 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Monday night.
While fans from both teams were gifted with one of the most entertaining games in Premier League history, it did not come without consequences for the Magpies.
Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula netted to bring Newcastle United back from 2-0 down, only for 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to fire in on the 100th minute. While the result was one thing, there were three injury concerns for Eddie Howe to deal with.
Joelinton left the pitch in tears after going down with a groin issue. The Brazilian had only just been named in the national team squad for September, so it is a huge blow for him. Additionally, Sandro Tonali was forced off with a shoulder issue in the second half. Post-match, Howe said the Italian could not even lift his arm due to the pain.
Elsewhere, there was concern for defender Fabian Schar, who was taken off due to concussion protocols. With fans wondering how he is doing, the Swiss star has provided an update on social media.
- Who is Fabian Schar? All there is to know about Newcastle United’s rock steady centre back

Fabian Schar provides injury update after scare vs Liverpool
Schar is still being favoured as the starting centre-back alongside Dan Burn. That is despite the recent signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan earlier this month.
Thiaw made his debut once Schar came off, and it looks as though the latter will be forced to spend some time on the sidelines due to his head injury.
In the meantime, Schar posted to the social media platform X to provide a health update.
“I am ok!” he said.
“Thanks for all the messages of concern. Disappointed to come off, but proud of the team spirit and energy last night!”
Whether Fabian Schar will play for Newcastle United vs Leeds
While Monday provided a spectacle full of drama, the Magpies have to focus and prepare for their next Premier League game.
This time, it is against newly promoted Leeds United, who could choose to start former Newcastle man Sean Longstaff after his move earlier this summer.
While Schar has confirmed he is ok, he is likely to miss the trip to Elland Road on Saturday. Should Schar be diagnosed with a concussion, he must take at least six days away from training before returning.
Newcastle play Leeds in four days, so he will not be allowed to feature. Thiaw will likely take Schar’s place in the starting XI, but Howe could also look to Sven Botman or Jamaal Lascelles to cover.
Losing Schar is a big blow for the Magpies, but it gives another defender the chance to show why they should have a permanent place in the starting line-up.
