Though they may seem a bit pointless, squad numbers are actually incredibly important in football and often have great significance for players and fans alike.
Whether footballers want numbers for sentimental reasons, for their prestige or because it matches their position, there can often be competition within squads for who gets what digit.
Eddie Howe is lucky to have a massive squad at his disposal at Newcastle United, which means there are a whole lot of squad numbers assigned.
From the famous No.9 to the massive No.67, here is everything you need to know about Newcastle’s squad numbers in the 2024/25 season.
1 – Martin Dubravka
Previously worn by: Rob Elliot, Tim Krul, Steve Harper, Shay Given, Pavel Srnicek.
Though he isn’t Howe’s first-choice goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka still sports the No.1 shirt that he first earned in 2019.
2 – Kieran Trippier
Previously worn by: Ciaran Clark, Fabricio Coloccini, Stephen Carr, Andy Griffin, Waren Barton.
After being handed No.15 upon first joining the club in January 2022, Kieran Trippier upgraded to the traditional right-back number 2 the following summer.

Fabian Schar has worn the No.5 with distinction since he joined the club in a bargain transfer in 2018.

The No.6 has traditionally been a centre-back’s number at Newcastle and that remains the case with captain Jamaal Lascelles, who took the number in 2016.

Joelinton switched to the No.7 following Andy Carroll’s second departure in 2021.
