Newcastle United publicly slammed for Nick Woltemade deal, it ‘has nothing to do with football’

Newcastle United fans are waiting to see club record signing Nick Woltemade in action.

Indeed, Newcastle spent huge money to sign Woltemade, who looks like one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.

However, Woltemade remains relatively untested. Though clearly a talent, the 23-year-old made only 70 appearances in the Bundesliga before getting his big money move to the Premier League

While Newcastle have taken the pressure off somewhat with the signing of Yoane Wissa, a Premier League-proven player to lead the line while Woltemade develops, the German still needs to live up to his price tag.

Bayern Munich were also interested in Woltemade but he eventually joined Newcastle to replace Alexander Isak.

Now, the German giants have spoken out.

Bayern Munich slam Newcastle United over Nick Woltemade deal

Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß has claimed the club massively overpaid for the former Stuttgart forward.

He suggested that Newcastle treated their funds like “Monopoly” money, while claiming the deal has “nothing to do with football.”

Speaking to Sport 1, he said: “We offered €55 million for Nick Woltemade, while Stuttgart wanted €75 million. In the end he went to Nottingham [meaning Newcastle] for €90m.

“What Newcastle are doing has nothing to do with football. It’s like Monopoly these days.”

How much did Newcastle United pay for Nick Woltemade?

Newcastle spent around £65million to sign Woltemade, though the deal could eventually rise to £69million.

Clearly, that is a huge amount of money. However, that sort of fee looks in keeping with the money spent on both Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike this summer, who are both strikers of similar profile.

Time will tell on Woltemade. However, it’s worth remembering that Newcastle boast a brilliant track record in terms of recruitment during the PIF era.

As such, they’ve earned trust. Many would have suggested Newcastle overpaid for Alexander Isak when they spent around £63million to sign him in 2022, and he ended up becoming one of the best strikers in the world before leaving for a British record fee, after all.
