Alexander Isak will no doubt be hoping to take his club form back onto the international stage when the Newcastle United striker returns to Sweden duty.

Isak is a Newcastle United legend and one of Swedish football’s leading stars in the post-Zlatan Ibrahimovic era.

In 52 games for Sweden, the 25-year-old has bagged 16 goals. Indeed, 27 players have scored more than the Newcastle star for his country, but Isak still has an awful lot of time to catch up with them.

Interestingly, Isak’s international teammate and current Sporting CP in Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

It’s been claimed that Newcastle want to sign Gyokeres and play him alongside Isak at club level, which would mean the current Toon star shifts out towards the left wing somewhat.

Speaking of their partnership, teammate Emil Forsberg has shared his view.

Emil Forsberg shares exciting Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres message

Sweden international Forsberg, who plays for New York Red Bulls, was speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap’s show in the United States named ‘It’s Called Soccer’.

During the interview, he was asked about Sweden’s chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Forsberg is of the belief that Isak and Gyokeres provide almost a guarantee of “easy goals”. This season, Isak has scored 26 times in 39 appearances across all competitions, while Gyokeres has hit a remarkable 48 in 52.

“The quality we have in the Swedish national team as of now is really, really good,” he said.

Asked about Isak and Newcastle transfer target Gyokeres, Forsberg said: “That’s some easy goals right there.

“You’ve got to let these guys be themselves in the national team, as well. To play the way they play in Newcastle or at Sporting.”

What Alexander Isak has said about playing with Viktor Gyokeres

Newcastle believe Liam Delap can play alongside Isak too, so it seems there’s a real school of thought suggesting their current leading man can operate well in a partnership.

The prospect of playing the two Sweden stars up front together is exciting, albeit it does seem somewhat far-fetched given Sporting will surely ask for huge sums of money if they are to sell Gyokeres.

Still, Isak enjoys playing with Gyokeres, and the pair have linked up for four goals in 12 appearances together.

That’s already as many as he has with Callum Wilson, while more than Isak’s record with Joe Willock (3), Kieran Trippier, Sandro Tonali and Sean Longstaff (2).

Back in March 2023, Isak said (via Fotboll Skanalen): “It is very nice to play with such a player, one who wins all his duels. He did excellently. It made it easier for me, that I could find my areas.”
