Newcastle United have allowed several players to leave on loan this season.

The Magpies’ loan manager Shola Ameobi has been busy moving players from both the academy and the first-team around clubs across Europe.

There are currently eight Newcastle players out on loan at clubs in the Football League and in countries like Denmark and Holland.

A forgotten Magpie Isaac Hayden joined Portsmouth in January to link with former Newcastle man Matt Ritchie.

Elsewhere, defender Charlie McArthur joined Carlisle United and made his debut alongside Paul Dummett, another former Newcastle man.

The most recent loan move was Alex Murphy joining Bolton Wanderers. Things got off to an odd start for Murphy as head coach Ian Evatt was sacked just a couple of days after he joined the club, putting his chances of getting minutes in jeopardy.

Thankfully for the defender, that has not been the case. Bolton’s new manager has had some fantastic things to say about him.

Steven Schumacher on Newcastle loanee Alex Murphy

Before being loaned out, Murphy was in and around Newcastle’s matchday squads. He has made two appearances under Toon boss Eddie Howe, albeit very small cameos in stoppage time.

Murphy revealed a desire to play first-team football and requested a loan move in the transfer window. He got his wish and made his first start for Bolton under new manager Steven Schumacher.

Eddie Howe told Murphy to prove he can play Premier League football while he was at Bolton – he had his first chance to do that on Saturday.

The 20-year-old played 66 minutes before being taken off, but he had done more than enough to impress Schumacher.

After Bolton’s 1-0 defeat to Reading, Schumacher spoke to Bolton News about the result and the performance of his players. He made a point to single out Murphy for his efforts.

“Young Alex Murphy makes his league debut,” he said.

“I thought he was outstanding for his first start. So, loads and loads of positives to take.”

Murphy should be in line to feature in Bolton’s next game against Crawley Town, a team managed by former Newcastle shot-stopper Rob Elliot.

Newcastle’s other loanees make progress

For some Newcastle players who have been loaned out, it has been a tough few months. For others, they are thriving.

Joe White joined MK Dons in the summer and has enjoyed a fantastic season in League Two, scoring six goals. White joined while former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson was in charge.

Young goalkeeper Max Thompson has also impressed on loan at Chesterfield. The 20-year-old has kept five clean sheets in 16 games.

Hayden has been a bit part of Portsmouth’s squad since joining in January. The 29-year-old has already made six appearances as Pompey looks to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.
