Newcastle United return to action with a Premier League clash against reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Eddie Howe‘s side will be desperate to bounce back after an “awful” 3-1 defeat at Fulham, but they will have to dig deep to get a result against league-leading Manchester City.

Newcastle United’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Craven Cottage, and their chance to get things back on track will come at St James’ Park when they face City in the early kick-off.

Newcastle expected to face AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday evening but the Carabao Cup clash was postponed due to heavy flooding.

It means Howe’s side have a full week of rest and recovery while City are scheduled to face Watford on Tuesday evening.

On top of that, City could be without several key players for their trip to Tyneside, including Kevin de Bruyne.

Kevin de Bruyne injury update

City returned to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday afternoon after a fiery 2-2 draw with title rivals Arsenal.

After suffering an injury just 21 minutes into the match, Rodri is a major injury concern for City ahead of their trip to Newcastle.

There has also been an update on whether Erling Haaland will be suspended for Saturday’s match after he was heavily involved against Arsenal.

Now, Pep Guardiola has given an update on De Bruyne’s injury status after he missed the weekend clash against Arsenal.

As per the Manchester Evening News, Guardiola was unsure that De Bruyne would return to fitness in time for Saturday’s clash. He ruled him out of their Carabao Cup game against Watford.

Journalist Simon Bajkowski branded De Bruyne a “doubt” and insisted that City do not want to rush him back against Newcastle on Saturday.

De Bruyne suffered a thigh injury during City’s goalless draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League. He also missed large parts of last season after struggling with a hamstring issue.

Newcastle must take advantage of weakened Man City

Newcastle know exactly how it feels to have a squad depleted by injuries, and thankfully things are looking much better for the Magpies so far this season.

City’s midfield in particular is likely to be significantly weakened for their trip to Tyneside and that is an area where Newcastle are arguably strongest.

Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali are all fit and raring to play together after the latter started on the bench against Fulham.

Newcastle and Howe have already proven they can hurt City – especially at home.

The next three home games could prove pivotal for Howe, and getting a good result against City will do the club a world of good after the Fulham defeat.
