Eddie Howe has provided injury updates on Newcastle United stars Nick Pope and Sven Botman ahead of facing Manchester United.

The Magpies take on Manchester United on Boxing Day, with Eddie Howe hoping to make it consecutive wins at Old Trafford after last season’s 2-0 triumph.

His Newcastle United side are battered and bruised heading into Friday night’s game, amid a myriad of injury issues in defence.

Tino Livramento and Dan Burn are injured, but there is more positive news on goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Nick Pope could be back against Manchester United

The 33-year-old has missed the Magpies’ last seven games with a groin injury, but could be available for the game against Manchester United.

Howe was asked about Pope during his pre-match press conference, with the Toon boss admitting that he could be involved.

“There is a chance [he could be in the squad against Man United],” he said.

“He hasn’t trained yet. We hope he might train today. Let’s see how he does.”

Pope is predicted to return to the starting XI when he is fit, although it would come as a surprise if he immediately replaces Aaron Ramsdale at Old Trafford.

Sven Botman nearing Newcastle United return

In defence, Newcastle United have just two fully fit centre-backs in Malick Thiaw and Fabian Schar.

Sven Botman is out of action with a back injury, but it was recently reported that he could be available in late December or early January.

The Newcastle United manager has also provided an update on the Dutchman’s condition, and it sounds like his return is also not too far away either.

“Sven would be in the category of the group of players who are doing well,” Howe said.

“We hope to get him back pretty soon. When that day is I’m not 100% sure. He hasn’t trained with the group yet, but potentially good news.

“I don’t think he’s too far away.”

Despite Howe’s promising update on Botman, he is not expected to feature against Manchester United on Boxing Day.
