Newcastle United issue major Anthony Gordon update ahead of Manchester City clash

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has been an injury doubt heading into this weekend’s game against Manchester City.

The Magpies were in action on Saturday evening, as Newcastle United beat Birmingham City to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup. However, it was a much changed Newcastle United side, and one that did not include Anthony Gordon.

The 23-year-old was not even in the squad that travelled to St Andrew’s, with Gordon missing out due to a thigh issue. That was a major concern as Newcastle look towards the Carabao Cup final next month, plus a string of challenging Premier League fixtures.

It was even more of a concern given Newcastle’s lack of options out wide. Harvey Barnes is injured, while Miguel Almiron was sold in January.

However, Eddie Howe suddenly has nothing to worry about regarding Gordon.

According to the Daily Mail, Anthony Gordon is over his thigh problem and should be fit to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

That is a massive boost, as Newcastle go in search of just their second ever win at the Etihad.

Anthony Gordon’s record for Newcastle against the ‘big six’

With Gordon no longer an injury concern, he will return to the Newcastle United starting XI this weekend.

He will aim to add to his exceptional record against the ‘big six’ this season, having excelled in games against English football’s alleged elite.

In all competitions this season, Gordon has scored five goals and provided two assists against the ‘big six’. One of those goals was against Manchester City, as he netted a penalty in a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

Before that game, Gordon was the subject of a Wor Flags display, as supporters showered the forward with love.

Gordon also scored against Man City in the Premier League last season, in a game that the Magpies lost 3-2.

The England international really is capable of raising his game against the best teams in the country, while he has proven that he can hurt Pep Guardiola’s side. That is why it is pivotal that he is fit for this weekend’s Premier League fixture.
