Newcastle United are attempting to reshuffle their goalkeeping department as they step up their bid to sign James Trafford from Burnley.

It has been reported that Trafford has agreed personal terms to join Newcastle United, as he edges closer to making the move he wanted to make in 2024.

One year on, the Magpies are trying to sign the 22-year-old again, but he is going to be more expensive. Newcastle’s £25million bid for Trafford has been rejected, with Toon officials expected to launch an improved offer.

If Trafford does arrive, he will become the sixth senior goalkeeper at St James’ Park. That is far too many, although one could be on his way out of the club in the coming days.

Newcastle United goalkeeper could leave

Newcastle United recently announced that they are in talks with John Ruddy over a contract extension. He signed a one-year deal last summer, with that deal due to expire on 30th June.

As that date creeps closer and closer, the veteran goalkeeper is yet to make an official decision regarding his future.

According to the i Paper, Ruddy is still weighing up his options.

He has the chance to stay at Newcastle United, or there could be an opportunity to move elsewhere. The i Paper add that Norwich City are interested in re-signing Ruddy, who spent seven seasons at Carrow Road.

The 38-year-old was a Norwich player between 2010 and 2017, making 243 appearances for the Canaries in all competitions.

Newcastle United await one more contract decision as well as John Ruddy

Ruddy is not the only player who Newcastle United are in contract talks with. When the club announced their retained list, they also confirmed that Callum Wilson was in negotiations over remaining on Tyneside.

Newcastle fans were shocked by the Wilson announcement, as it had looked certain that the 33-year-old would be leaving. Wilson even appeared to say goodbye to the Newcastle fans after the final game of the season against Everton.

But he is in talks over a contract extension. It would be on fresh terms, with a new deal likely to be heavily incentivised based on his appearances.

As Toon fans wait to discover Wilson’s fate, the number nine is currently doing some media work. Wilson is working as a pundit for DAZN’s coverage of the Club World Cup.
