Newcastle United have shared an official update on Callum Wilson’s future at St James’ Park.

The 33-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of June, but it was reported that Wilson is in talks with Newcastle over an extension.

That has proven to be the case, with Newcastle United announcing that they are in negotiations with Callum Wilson and that he could remain on Tyneside.

The same goes for John Ruddy, who is also out of contract. It was reported that Ruddy is set to leave Newcastle United, but he may also get the chance to stay.

Regarding Wilson, a fresh contract would represent quite the turnaround. Wilson was emotional after Newcastle’s game against Everton and appeared to say goodbye to the St James’ Park crowd.

Newcastle United fans react to Callum Wilson contract talks announcement

However, it might not be goodbye at all, much to the dismay of the Toon Army.

Following Newcastle United’s announcement, fans have been giving their thoughts on Wilson potentially staying on X (formerly known as Twitter).

One fan wrote: “Missing out on a young quality player like Delap was frustrating but keeping an ageing, injury prone (great servant to the club) is crazy. Looking at the likes of Evan Ferguson, who Eddie could do wonders with would surely be better?”

“What an inspiring transfer window this is,” replied another Toon supporter.

A third Newcastle United fan wrote: “Just don’t understand what the club is doing. Extending Wilson would be a huge mistake as he looked completely finished this season.”

This member of the Toon Army added: “I don’t see how a new contract for Wilson helps us more than it hinders us. Better for all involved to move on in my opinion.”

A fifth Newcastle supporter wrote: “There’s just no point. Wilson has done his bit for the club but he’s barely even a body for depth these days. Move him on.”

Finally, this fan noted: “I love Wilson but at this point he’s just a waste of a squad number.”

Newcastle United confirm contract extension as two players get set to leave

While the futures of Wilson and Ruddy remain up in the air for now, the club have provided more solid updates on Mark Gillespie, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly.

Gillespie is staying put, with Newcastle United taking up the option to extend his contract. Gillespie is heralded for his role behind the scenes, so it is no major surprise that he has been kept on.

Jamal Lewis will be leaving the club to become a free agent. He was brought in by Steve Bruce, with the Magpies signing him in 2020 from Norwich City for £15million.

The club have also announced that Lloyd Kelly’s loan move to Juventus will become a permanent transfer on the 30th June. That will go down as a great bit of business, with Kelly signing for Newcastle on a free in 2024.
