Newcastle United were well beaten by Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
It was a familiar story for Newcastle United fans to read – the Magpies are beaten at Anfield. They haven’t won there since 1994 when Andy Cole and Rob Lee scored to secure the three points.
In 2025, Eddie Howe’s side could not repeat the same feat and fell to a 2-0 defeat thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. The Magpies failed to register a shot on target in the game as they struggled in attack due to Alexander Isak’s injury absence which left Callum Wilson to fend for himself.
Bruno Guimaraes was ‘awful’ for Newcastle according to John Anderson, who suggested the Brazilian has been ‘poor for a while’. The 27-year-old has played an extensive amount of football this season and is in desperate need of a rest.
Elsewhere, Nick Pope put in another torrid performance after coming back from injury in the game against Nottingham Forest. Liverpool fans initially groaned when Szoboszlai’s effort was scuffed before realising that Pope had actually failed to stop it from rolling into the back of the net.
With Newcastle now left picking up the pieces from the loss, an unseen moment from Kieran Trippier has now been shared.

Kieran Trippier’s demand to Newcastle teammates
Trippier has become more of a sporadic first-team player for Newcastle this season, making way for the younger Tino Livramento who has performed well this season.
The 34-year-old is now seen as a player who can see out a game rather than someone who starts each week but he still makes sure to put his experience into practice whenever his teammates need a pick-me-up.
After the game on Wednesday, the Chronicle reported that Trippier was the first person to usher the rest of the Newcastle squad over to the away fans to applaud them.
Trippier was Newcastle’s captain for two seasons before handing over the reins to Guimaraes at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, the Brazilian has taken the new role in his stride but has still given Trippier opportunities to wear the captain’s armband on occasion.
Kieran Trippier could captain Newcastle against Brighton
With the defeat now in the past, Newcastle are now looking towards their important FA Cup fifth-round tie against Brighton.
The Magpies will have home advantage for the clash but must remember what happened in the Seagulls’ last visit to St James’ Park this season. Newcastle lost 1-0 to Brighton in October thanks to a first-half strike from Danny Welbeck.
There is a big chance that Howe could look to rotate his starting XI like he did against Bromley and Birmingham City in the previous rounds of the competition. Trippier could be in line to start the game having only played around 20 minutes against Liverpool.
The former England international played all 90 minutes in the win against Bromley but had to watch on from the bench against Birmingham. Trippier was berated by Newcastle fans for his performance in the defeat to Manchester City earlier in February, he was taken off at half-time after being at fault for the first of four goals.
