The referee has been confirmed for Newcastle United vs Nottingham Forest this week.

It is a huge game in the race for Champions League qualification, as Newcastle United welcome high flying Nottingham Forest to St James’ Park.

The Magpies are on a poor run in the Premier League, losing three of their last four games. They are also on the back of a heavy defeat to Manchester City, with Newcastle’s performance called ‘unacceptable’ by Alan Shearer.

Eddie Howe’s side need to bounce back, and the Premier League have now announced who the referee will be for Sunday’s game on Tyneside.

Who will referee Newcastle United vs Nottingham Forest

It has been confirmed that Jarred Gillett will referee the match between Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Peter Bankes is on VAR duty.

This will be the second time that Gillett has officiated a Newcastle United game this season. The first came back in September, when the Magpies drew 1-1 with Manchester City at St James’ Park.

On that day, Anthony Gordon scored a penalty after being fouled in the box by Man City goalkeeper Ederson.

Interestingly, Mike Dean did not think it was a penalty, but admitted that VAR would not intervene. They did not, and Gordon converted his spot kick.

Why Newcastle United fans will not happy

While Newcastle benefitted from a dubious decision by Gillett earlier this season, it was a different story when he took charge of the Magpies’ Carabao Cup quarter-final against Chelsea last season.

Within the first few minutes of the game, Anthony Gordon was fouled by Moises Caicedo. It was a shocking tackle by the Chelsea midfielder, with Gillett handing him a yellow card.

However, Gary Neville said Caicedo should have been sent off. Replays showed what a horrible tackle it was, but there was no VAR to spare Gillett’s blushes.

The severity of the tackle was summed up by Gordon being forced off through injury later in the game.

Newcastle went on to lose that game on penalties, as their Carabao Cup journey came to an end. Had Chelsea been reduced to 10-men, perhaps there would have been a better chance of the Magpies advancing to the final four of the competition.

Gillett was also involved in another red card related incident with Newcastle United in 2022. He took charge of the Magpies’ home Premier League game against Manchester City, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

It was a thrilling contest, but one that almost ended with Kieran Trippier being sent off. He was given a red card for a cynical foul on Kevin de Bruyne, who was absolutely furious with Trippier.

Gillett sent Trippier off, only for VAR to tell the Aussie official that he had made a mistake. It was a very clear yellow card, with Gillett reversing his decision.

Hopefully he is not involved in any controversy this weekend as he takes charge of Newcastle United vs Nottingham Forest.
