Indeed, while Newcastle were unable to take all three points from their Premier League clash with Manchester City, a draw has to be seen as a positive given just how bad Eddie Howe’s side were at Fulham last weekend.
In what was perhaps a more important development than just the result, the Newcastle United manager saw some of his big players step up.
Nick Pope was hailed by Pep Guardiola, while Joelinton drew the praise of pundit Joe Cole after a strong performance to respond to mounting criticism of his displays this season.
The standout, however, was surely Anthony Gordon.
Slammed for his body language against Fulham last weekend, the forward both won and scored a penalty against the champions and impressed Howe with his work rate.
It’s another goal against one of the elite too, adding to his positive record in the biggest games.
Teammate Jacob Murphy had one word for the England star.

Gordon took to Instagram after the game, captioning a collage of himself in action: “Memories that will stay with me forever, thank you. “
Murphy, who flanked the forward on the day, responded with the word: “Clutch.”
For those who are not aware, a “clutch” player is generally regarded as an American term describing an athlete who performs well under pressure.
Anthony Gordon made a statement for Newcastle United
It was fantastic to see Gordon back and making a difference only days after reports of a new contract being close emerged.
Having kissed the Newcastle badge after scoring too, it was a statement of intent from the England international.
It’s taken a while this season but Gordon looks to have clicked into gear.
Newcastle will undoubtedly now be all the better for it.
