Newcastle United were set to travel to AFC Wimbledon for their third round Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday evening.

However, just over 24 hours before the match was scheduled to take place, the match has now been officially postponed.

Newcastle United took to social media to announce the postponement, citing “extensive overnight flooding” at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, often referred to as Plough Lane.

A new date is yet to be confirmed for the Carabao Cup clash, with the club stating that further details will be announced in due course.

Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 on penalties in the previous round, but their League Cup campaign has now been put on hold.

Footage shows extent of flooding at Plough Lane

Whispers of the game potentially being postponed started on Monday morning after a night of terrible weather.

However, it seemed a hasty decision to call off the game with over 24 hours still to go before kick-off.

But footage of Plough Lane has circulated on social media and it shows exactly why it was a clear-cut decision to call off the game, with major damage to one corner of the pitch.

Via Mouth of the Tyne on X, formerly known as Twitter, a video of the ground shows what appears to be a potential sinkhole at the corner of the pitch.

It is blindingly clear that the pitch is in no shape to host a match and the correct decision has been made.

Newcastle United now have rest before Man City

For Newcastle, there will be mixed emotions about the postponement.

On one hand, it gives the squad an extra couple of days of rest, recovery and training before reigning Premier League champions Manchester City come to town.

City travel to St James’ Park for the early kick-off next Saturday and Pep Guardiola’s side are set to face Watford in the League Cup on Tuesday night before making the journey north.

However, after losing 3-1 to Fulham, the cup clash against Wimbledon was also an opportunity for Newcastle to rebuild their confidence against a lower-league side.
