Newcastle United confirm major boost as key player returns to training

Newcastle United have not had many positives to enjoy this summer but the return of Lewis Hall will no doubt come as a boost.

Hall established himself as one of Newcastle United’s best players last season despite an indifferent start at the club during his first year under Eddie Howe.

The defender had struggled to convince when first joining on loan from Chelsea but made a significant improvement during the 2024/25 campaign after the deal had become permanent.

Indeed, Hall was rewarded for his fine form with an England debut in November 2024. Still, his season ended in heartbreak after he suffered a foot injury in March and duly missed the Carabao Cup final.

However, after a long road back, Newcastle have confirmed a positive update on the 20-year-old.

Lewis Hall back in full training for Newcastle United

On Saturday, Newcastle confirmed Hall had returned to full training with the rest of the squad.

He hasn’t appeared since the Premier League defeat to Liverpool in February, which came a few weeks before Howe’s side won the Carabao Cup against the Reds at Wembley.

Hall may now be available for Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Tottenham, although that may be unlikely given the extent of his absence.

Newcastle play Espanyol and Atletico Madrid in a Sela Cup double-header next week, which feels like a more likely return date.

Lewis Hall suddenly has fresh competition at Newcastle United

The Newcastle United squad is not particularly well-balanced. Indeed, Howe has a plethora of goalkeepers at his disposal but not much cover in central midfield or up front.

Hall, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Matt Targett are all capable of playing at left-back too, while Kieran Trippier has even operated there in some high-profile games for England.

They are not the only options in that position, either.

Newcastle fans have been impressed by Alex Murphy during the pre-season, with the Irish defender getting regular minutes.
