Newcastle United continue to invest in their future after handing one of their brightest young prospects a new contract.
The Magpies recently announced that Joelinton has extended his stay, while it has been reported that Mark Gillespie had also been given a contract extension at St James’ Park.
Now Toon officials have turned their attention towards some of their younger players, one of which made his Premier League debut earlier this season.
Newcastle United announce contract extension
It was recently reported that Newcastle United were in contract talks with Alex Murphy over a new deal, after the Irish defender had changed his agent.
His previous deal was due to expire in 2025, but now the 19-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the club to keep him in the North East beyond next year.
It caps off a brilliant season for Alex Murphy, who made a real impression in pre-season last summer. It has led to him being regularly involved with the first-team, making two Premier League appearances as a substitute.
He will be hoping for more opportunities next season, but it looks like Murphy could be playing his football away from St James’ Park.

What is next for Alex Murphy
That is according to Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope, who has provided an update on what is next for Murphy following his contract announcement.
He wrote on X: “Was impressed first time I saw him at 17 for U23s. Definitely one who could mature into first-team player. Set for loan move next season.”
What Alex Murphy has said about his immediate Newcastle future
It sounds like a loan move is next on the agenda for Murphy, with Newcastle United keen for the teenager to continue his development.
However, comments on the club’s official website from Murphy suggest that he would rather remain with Eddie Howe and the rest of the first-team.
“Next season is big for me,” he said.
“I want to try and fully break through, playing in the Premier League every week. That’s the goal.”
Murphy is keen to become a regular starter for Howe, but next season might be too soon for that dream to become a reality.
Instead, a loan move is probably sensible. It will be interesting to see what level Newcastle decide he should play at. Ideally, a Championship club where he is going to play every week would be for the best.
But loan deals are not easy, as we have seen with Garang Kuol. He has endured two miserable spells away from St James’ Park, and Murphy will hope to have more luck on his travels.
Regardless, Murphy appears to be well placed to become a first-team regular for Newcastle in the coming years. Howe is a big fan, and has recently spoke very highly about Murphy – describing him as ‘versatile’.
Howe will be delighted that Murphy has signed a new deal, and will continue doing all he can to ensure he reaches his potential.
