The summer transfer window might be an exciting one for Newcastle United but that does not mean it will be easy.

With Eddie Howe’s side potentially playing Champions League football next season, some big names can surely be expected to arrive.

Still, that brings with it competition.

No longer are Newcastle shopping in the proverbial bargain basement so, naturally, actually landing players wanted by other clubs gets harder.

That brings us to Kieran Tierney.

Aston Villa enter race to sign Kieran Tierney

Indeed, the Arsenal defender – once described as a “warrior” by a certain Ashley Cole – has long been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Still, despite the player reportedly being tempted by a move to Newcastle, fresh competition has emerged.

The Daily Telegraph suggest Aston Villa are ready to make a move to sign the Scotland international amid big plans of their own this summer.

Luckily, however, the report also adds Newcastle is still seen as his most likely destination were he to leave the Gunners.

Wages shouldn’t be a problem

With Tierney reportedly on wages of around £110k-per-week, that shouldn’t be an issue for Newcastle.

If they are up against Villa in a transfer battle, you’d have to back the Magpies side to come out on top.

That’s not to try and downgrade the Midlands club even despite the rivalry between the two sides. Under Unai Emery, they have shot up the Premier League and are clearly backed by ambitious owners.

Still, if Newcastle can get into the Champions League, that would be a major game-changer.

Tierney would have one of Europe’s most ambitious clubs willing to give him regular football under a manager who has constantly improved the players with which he’s worked.

That would be a hard thing to turn down.
