The Champions League could unlock new doors for Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side can take a major step in securing qualification for the game’s most elite competition by beating Tottenham on Sunday.

While last week’s loss at Aston Villa left little more margin for error in the top four race, claiming another three points against a team chasing them would be a huge statement of intent.

In some ways, this is Newcastle’s biggest games of the season.

Granted, that sounds silly to suggest given there has already been a first domestic cup final in 24 years but qualification for the Champions League could change things for the club.

Indeed, big-name targets could become attainable.

Champions League could help Newcastle sign Moussa Diaby

According to The Athletic, entry into Europe’s elite surroundings could help Newcastle land Moussa Diaby.

The French international was a target last summer but opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen as they had Champions League football on offer.

While Anthony Gordon has since come in to strengthen Newcastle’s options in attack, Howe is believed to remain keen on the 23-year-old.

Interestingly, Howe is also said to want players with Champions League experience, so they can make an impact in the competition should Newcastle ultimately get there.

Moussa Diaby is the dream

The Athletic have also previously said Diaby is Newcastle’s “dream” signing, while BILD suggest he could cost as much as £53m.

With nine goals and six assists in the Bundesliga this season, as well as averaging 1.9 key passes per game (via WhoScored), it’s easy to see why. Currently, only Kieran Trippier can beat that average in the Newcastle squad.

Described as “one of the biggest” prospect in French football by Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, the idea of signing him is a hugely exciting.

If Newcastle can get back into the Champions League, it could become a reality.
