Newcastle United reportedly have their eye on RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who name the centre-back as one of multiple players being discussed by the Magpies.
Newcastle are reportedly drawing up plans for the summer transfer window. The Daily Mail adds that they are looking at goalkeepers, a centre-backs, a centre-midfielders, wingers and a strikers.
The recruitment are basically looking to improve Newcastle all over the pitch, as they look to guide the club up the Premier League table.
That is the ambitions of the new owners, who are set for a huge summer at St James’ Park.
The club tried and failed to land their primary defensive targets in January. Moves for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos collapsed.
Dan Burn arrived instead, and the local lad has been absolutely fantastic.
But Newcastle are still looking for another centre-back this summer, and it would appear they want someone young with a lot of potential. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Gvardiol mentioned.
But who is the latest name Newcastle are seemingly looking at?
Newcastle target Josko Gvardiol is ‘built like a tank’
Gvardiol is one of the highest rated defenders in Europe today. He is Croatian, and has already represented his country 10 times at the age of 20.
He started his professional career at Dinamo Zagreb, but signed for RB Leipzig in 2020. He cost the Bundesliga side £13.5million, but stayed on loan with the Croatian outfit for the rest of the season.
Gvardiol linked up with Leipzig at the start of the current campaign, and has featured 36 times in all competitions. That includes six Champions League appearances.
He’s been named in BBC Sport’s Wunderkids XI, a team that includes the best young talent from across the globe.
Germania Sport’s Izak Ante Sucic has spoken very highly of him to BBC. “Since he was a child, he’s been built like a tank,” he said.
The youngster operates as a left-sided centre-back, just like Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk. In fact, Gvardiol has been compared the the Netherlands captain.
“In Croatia we like to compare him to Virgil van Dijk, because he’s built that way,” Sucic added.
He also said: “In my opinion, I think he can be as good as Virgil one day. When you see how he behaves on the field and off the field, he’s one of those guys where you’d say ‘he’s going to succeed’.”
That is huge praise for Gvardiol. Van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world today, and has played a key role in Liverpool’s recent trophy success.
If Newcastle can land Gvardiol, they will have a real talent on their hands.
