Newcastle United will undoubtedly move to bolster their defensive options in the summer.

The Magpies have been much improved at the back lately, with Dan Burn and Matt Targett both making really significant impacts.

But Newcastle need to upgrade on several players.

Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez will likely be moved on. Paul Dummett could also depart.

Newcastle are seeing the value of having a solid defence, and adding more even more quality will be important this summer.

One player Newcastle were linked with leading up to the January transfer window was Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan.

The Slovakia international, who is an international teammate of Martin Dubravka, was supposedly on the Magpies’ radar (Daily Mail).

He was also a target for Tottenham Hotspur, whose manager Antonio Conte knows him well.

Newcastle struggling to sign centre-backs in January, with Burn the only incoming in the end. It seemed there wasn’t much of a push for Skriniar, perhaps because Inter were never likely to sell.

Last night, Skriniar really caught the eye with his performance in the Champions League against Liverpool.

The 27-year-old started the second leg, and was part of a colossal defensive effort from the visitors at Anfield.

Inter won the game 1-0, but lost the tie 2-1 on aggregate. According to Squawka, Skriniar had 100% tackle success, 88% pass accuracy and made a whopping nine clearances. He also committed no fouls and was never dribbled past.

He was named the official man-of-the-match, rather upstaging the highest-profile defender playing in the match Virgil van Dijk.

It was just a solid display from the £55 million-rated star (via Daily Mail), who really showed what a good addition he could be for Newcastle this summer.

Milan Skriniar would be a big statement signing by Newcastle

Skriniar has been linked with a move to the Premier League for quite some time now.

He is 27 years old, and might be that he finally comes to English shores this summer.

Quite simply, he would be an amazing signing by Newcastle if the club could pull it off. It could be a tricky deal to do, but the Magpies at least have the finances to do it.

Perhaps the presence of Dubravka could help. And the excitement of the project may well really appeal to a player of top quality.
