Nick Pope looks set to become Newcastle United’s second major signing of the summer.
He’ll be the first new player to arrive at St James’ Park, after Matt Targett’s loan deal became permanent.
The addition of Pope will end Eddie Howe’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper. He’s been after more competition for Martin Dubravka, and now he’s getting it. Pope will battle with the Slovakian to be the Magpies’ number one stopper.
That’s a bargain fee for one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, and a man who has represented England eight times.
Sky Sports add that a deal has now been agreed with Burnley, meaning Pope is one step closer to being officially confirmed as a Newcastle United player.
Nick Pope to have Newcastle medical tomorrow
The goalkeeper must now complete a medical with the Magpies. And Sky Sports claim that will happen on Thursday.
That increases the possibility of the deal being announced this week. It could even happen tomorrow.
It would be the second transfer that Newcastle have wrapped up quickly this summer. There was initially speculation that Targett wouldn’t return to St James’ Park, then within 24 hours he was signing a four-year deal.
The Pope deal seems to be going at an equally as exciting speed. He only emerged as a target late last week.
It’s a huge contrast to the pursuits of Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike. We’ve been chasing the duo since January, and now they’ve turned into fully fledged transfer sagas.
While Newcastle’s bids to bring in Botman and Ekitike stall, Pope is on his way to Tyneside.
He’ll have his medical tomorrow, and will be ready and raring to get to work when pre-season starts next month.
