Newcastle transfer news: What Sociedad chiefs are saying about Alexander Isak

Newcastle United are still considering a move for Alexander Isak if they can get him for the right price according to the Chronicle.

The Real Sociedad forward has been linked with a move to St James’ Park since March, and talk of a transfer to Tyneside intensified last month.

The Telegraph reported that Newcastle were willing to break their transfer record to sign Isak. However, that rumour quickly ended when it emerged that the 22-year-old was going to be too expensive.

It was reported that Sociedad would not let him go unless his £76million release clause was activated. There was also a claim that the Sweden international wanted around £200,000-a-week at Newcastle.

For multiple reasons, the deal was off. That was a shame, as Isak is a real talent who is hugely admired by head of recruitment Steve Nickson.

But while the deal is off for now, Newcastle would seemingly return if Sociedad lowered their demands. But is that likely to happen?

What Sociedad are saying about Isak to Newcastle

According to the Chronicle, Sociedad have said that they will not sell Isak for anything less than £50million. That’s the lowest figure they will consider for the ‘exceptional’ Swede who is ‘good at everything‘ according to Dejan Kulusevski.

The Chronicle add that Sociedad had nothing fresh to say regarding their Isak stance when contacted last night.

However, it is interesting that they state that he will not leave for less than £50million. If they are so adamant that he will not leave, why not just point to his £76million release clause?

Sociedad’s lowest valuation of £50million suggests that there is room for negotiation, and that Isak could be bought for less than £76million.

Wages would obviously be an issue given his reported demands, but this is a deal that Newcastle will likely keep their eye on. It might not be this summer, but Isak is a player who the Magpies definitely admire. He is someone who could be targeted again if the price is right.

Is that likely to happen this summer? It remains unlikely.
