Newcastle transfer news: West Ham close to agreeing Maxwel Cornet deal

Newcastle United target Maxwel Cornet appears to be edging closer to a move to West Ham.

That’s according to the Guardian, who claim that the Hammers are close to agreeing a deal for the Burnley ace.

It was claimed yesterday by Sky Sports that talks had been held between the two clubs, with West Ham favouring a loan deal. Now it appears that negotiations have progressed.

Cornet has a £17.5million release clause following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship, but it might not be met. The Guardian state that West Ham are trying to agree a lower fee, and that they are leading the race for the 25-year-old.

Newcastle are mentioned as a rival to David Moyes side, as well as Everton and Nottingham Forest. But all roads appear to point towards Cornet heading to the London Stadium.

If Newcastle miss out on Cornet, it will be considered a real blow. Our interest in the Ivorian has stepped up over the past week, with other attacking targets becoming hard to land.

A deal for the Burnley star appears easy due to his relatively modest release clause, but that seems to only tell half the story. It was claimed last week that Newcastle were ready to activate it, but that rumour from TalkSPORT doesn’t appear to be true.

There was claims of encouragement from Newcastle’s end, and Cornet is certainly an exciting player. He did brilliantly for Burnley last season, scoring nine goals. Given how well he played, it’s a real surprise that he hasn’t found a new club.

He can play out wide and through the middle, whilst also possessing the ability to score and create goals. When you look at it like that, it feels like a move from Newcastle is a no brainer. That’s exactly what we’re looking for.

But it now seems to be West Ham who are leading the race and are closest to securing his services for the new season. It will be another transfer blow for Newcastle if a deal goes through, but it’s not over until it’s over.

If Howe really wants to add Cornet to his squad, he needs Dan Ashworth to act quickly.
