Newcastle United now face competition from West Ham to sign Maxwel Cornet.
The Magpies’ interested in the Ivorian has stepped up in recent days, as Eddie Howe looks to add another winger to his squad.
It was recently claimed that Newcastle had received encouragement from Burnley with regards to signing Cornet. However, a price has not been agreed.
The 25-year-old reportedly has a £17.5million release clause, which seemingly doesn’t appeal to the Magpies.
But Newcastle do want to reunite Cornet with his former Lyon teammate Bruno Guimaraes. However, they will have to fend off interest from David Moyes’ Hammers.
West Ham want Cornet
According to Sky Sports, West Ham also want to sign the Burnley forward. They report that talks have taken place with the Clarets.
However, the Hammers do not want a permanent deal for Cornet. Sky Sports state that they would prefer to loan him.
Given Burnley’s financial position following relegation, that might not appeal to them. They will want to cash in on arguably their best player and most sellable asset.
Cornet was a star in the Premier League last season in a poor Burnley team. In the words of Kolo Toure, he was ‘unbelievable‘.
He scored nine league goals, but it wasn’t enough to avoid relegation. However, he certainly impressed, and proved that he has what it takes to be a success in the Premier League. That’s why Newcastle are keen, as Howe looks to add more goals to his side.
As for Moyes, he’s looking to boost his team’s attacking options as well. West Ham need more strength in depth, and Cornet would certainly provide that.
A move to the London Stadium would give Cornet the chance to play in Europe again like he did with Lyon, but a temporary switch might not appeal to Burnley.
This isn’t the first time this summer that Newcastle and West Ham have competed for a player. Both teams were chasing Armando Broja last month, and it looked like the Hammers were going to win the race.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and it looks like neither side is securing Broja’s services.
Next on the agenda is Cornet, and Newcastle and West Ham are once again going head to head. Will it be Howe or Moyes who comes out on top? Hopefully the former…
