Newcastle transfer news: Toon will move for Tielemans if given green light

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a deadline day move for Youri Tielemans.

It was reported on Wednesday that the Magpies could try and sign the Leicester midfielder before the transfer window closes, and now the clock is ticking.

Clubs cannot sign players after 11pm tonight, meaning Newcastle are running out of time to bring Tielemans to St James’ Park.

However, the 25-year-old is still an option Eddie Howe is willing to pursue – on one condition.

What needs to happen for Newcastle to move for Tielemans today

According to the Telegraph (9.25am), if Newcastle are going to sign anyone today it will most likely be a midfielder. And the player who supporters want is Tielemans.

The Telegraph add that the Magpies are interested in the Belgian, and will ‘eagerly’ make a move to sign him if they are given more encouragement to do so.

It sounds like Newcastle will only bid for Tielemans if they are given assurances that a deal can be done. That means they would need to be able to afford him, and be able to agree a contract with the player.

It’s been reported all summer that Tielemans wants to leave Leicester, but would a move to Newcastle suffice? On paper perhaps not, but it should when looking at the bigger picture.

It would be a good move for Newcastle and Tielemans

Newcastle are a club going in the right direction, and have already proven this season that they can hang with the Premier League’s elite. In contrast, Leicester are really struggling and appear to be on a downward trajectory.

We have the ability to challenge for Europe in the coming years, while the Foxes’ time near the top appears to be over.

It’s been claimed by Sky Sports that Tielemans is available for £25million. If that’s the case, Newcastle have to make a move. Sure, the club’s budget has been stretched with the Alexander Isak deal, but this is an opportunity that is too good to turn down.

Signing him would give Howe one of the best midfields in the Premier League – undoubtedly the best midfield outside of ‘the big six’.

He’s been described as a ‘special player‘ by former teammate Wes Morgan, and would join a talented group of Newcastle players. Having Tielemans alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton is an incredibly exciting prospect.

However, it still feels like a longshot at this stage. But it appears to be one to watch as the day goes on.
