Newcastle United reportedly want to bring Ivan Toney back to St James’ Park.
That’s according to the Telegraph, who claim the Magpies are interested in re-signing the 26-year-old. This comes almost four years after he was allowed to leave the club.
Toney joined Newcastle in 2015 from Northampton. He was just 19 at the time, with a couple of seasons in League Two under his belt.
Opportunities were limited in the North East. Toney made four appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, spending most of his days out on loan.
He was sold in 2018, joining Peterborough United for just £650,000. Since then, he hasn’t looked back.
Now he’s in the Premier League with the Bees, and has proven he can shine in the top flight. He currently has 12 league goals to his name – the same amount as Harry Kane.
That’s why Newcastle are targeting him, but it could cost a lot of money to rectify their 2018 mistake.
Newcastle may have to pay more than £30m to sign Ivan Toney again
According to the Telegraph, Brentford may command a fee in excess of £30million for their star striker. That’s no surprise given how well he’s done since winning promotion to the Premier League.
He deserves a lot of credit for his rise through the divisions. Thomas Frank hailed Toney for having the ‘mindset of a lion‘ earlier in the season.
Toney reportedly wants to join a bigger club than Brentford, which Newcastle certainly are. They have the potential to become something really special in the coming years.
And perhaps he will feel like he has unfinished business at St James’ Park. He’s certainly proven a lot of people wrong since leaving Newcastle almost four years ago.
