Newcastle transfer news: Toon to keep Dubravka despite Henderson move

Newcastle United reportedly have no plans to get rid of Martin Dubravka this summer.

There are plenty of Toon players up for grabs, but apparently the Slovakian isn’t one of them. The Northern Echo report that Newcastle simply do not want to lose the 33-year-old.

That’s despite the fact Dean Henderson is being heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park. If he does join the club, he’ll compete with Dubravka rather than replace him.

It’s a change of stance from January, when the Toon number one was rumoured to leave the club. He was reportedly offered to Manchester United, but Dubravka turned down the chance to join them.

He’s since played an important role in the Magpies’ resurgence, keeping seven clean sheets in 2022. He was particularly brilliant against Liverpool, after which Eddie Howe called him ‘outstanding‘.

Dubravka has always been a key player for Newcastle

Dubravka has been a key component for Newcastle since his arrival, even if he has suffered with injury problems during the past two seasons.

But he’s predominantly been the Magpies’ number one since his 2018 arrival. He was first signed by Rafa Benitez on loan, then the club made his loan from Sparta Prague permanent. He cost just £4million, proving to be an absolute bargain.

His place in the starting XI has never been properly challenged, but that could change next season.

Magpies preparing Dean Henderson bid

The Northern Echo report that Newcastle are set to make a bid for Henderson. The Magpies will reportedly offer around £15million to land the Red Devils deputy.

That’s despite previous claims that a loan deal would be preferred.

It doesn’t really matter whether he arrives permanently or temporarily. If Newcastle think they can stretch their budget to include a permanent deal for Henderson then great.

Given he’s only 25, we could be securing our number one for possibly the next decade. The England international certainly has the talent to be just that, providing he can recapture his Sheffield United form.

The report adds that Henderson is ready to leave Old Trafford, despite the change in manager. Erik ten Hag is the new boss, but plans to keep David de Gea as his number one.

That decision could propel Henderson to St James’ Park. However, it won’t force Dubravka out the door.
