Newcastle transfer news: Toon plan to hold Duvan Zapata talks

Duvan Zapata is reportedly a ‘viable’ striker option for Newcastle United as they plan a fresh approach for the forward.

The 31-year-old was heavily linked with the Magpies in January, but he failed to secure a move to St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s side are in the market for a goalscorer once again, and appear to be interested in the Colombia international.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are considering trying to sign Zapata from Atalanta. And he could cost a lot less than he would have at the start of the year.

£20million fee could bring Duvan Zapata to Newcastle

The Northern Echo’s report states that the powerhouse striker could be available for around £20million. That’s more in the Magpies’ price range, who have been put off by Alexander Isak’s £76million price tag.

It’s also a lot less than what Atalanta wanted for Zapata in January. Newcastle tried to sign him on loan then permanently for £25million, but the Italian side said no. They reportedly wanted £35million for his services.

He would certainly be an interesting signing for Howe. He’s keen to add more competition up front, with Callum Wilson and Chris Wood his current forward options.

We’ve been linked with the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Armando Broja, but Zapata is very different. The main difference is his age. Zapata is in his 30s, and doesn’t really fit the profile of what Newcastle are looking for.

That’s why talk of a move earlier in the week seemed farfetched, but now the Northern Echo have provided more information on him possibly moving to Tyneside.

They add that the Newcastle hierarchy are hoping to hold talks in the coming days to find out whether or not Atalanta are willing to do a deal.

While age isn’t on his side, Zapata’s goal record speaks for itself. He’s hit double figures six seasons in a row in Serie A, and could provide ample competition for Wilson at St James’ Park.

However, he would not be a long-term solution.
